The 3 Rules of Social Growth That Actually Work
No Henry Cavill references in this email sadly
I’m going to try and write this next bit without my usual tongue in cheek and jokes so the points land.. ok, let’s go.
Most people are stuck on social because they’re chasing tactics that don’t match how the platforms work today. If you want real growth and real results, follow these three rules:
1. Pick One Topic
Stop confusing the algorithm. Talk about one thing. Get known for it. Make 30 to 50 videos on that topic so the platform knows who to show your content to. Random content equals random results. You need to train the platform, like Youtube, that you’re that person you think you are. It takes time, like turning a freighter. If you’re The Small Business Builder, no one cares about your mindset content, you’re confusing the platform and confusion = death.
2. Forget Broad Virality (keeps trying to autocorrect to Virility…)
Views don’t matter if they’re from the wrong people. I know so many people get excited when their post of a feel good meme they post goes viral on their business account then cry when it doesn’t convert to leads. Duh… Sometimes awareness is curative, so stop chasing vanity metrics. I know a lot of profiles with tiny followings that make absolute bank. Why? They are laser focused on the area they deliver content to. Relevance beats reach. Don’t just get seen. Get seen by the right people.
3. Pick Your Platforms
Being everywhere sounds smart in your head, but it spreads you thin and your “cut and paste, be everywhere Gary Vee approach” doesn’t work anymore. Pick the one or two platforms your audience already uses. Go all-in. (*cough* cough for most of you it’s Youtube and LinkedIn). Use video, it what the peeps want. Engage in the comments. That’s how you build real traction.
Side note: My top clients hire people to just reply to comments and to engage with other accounts in their niche on the platforms. Think of it like a radio, it’s transmit and receive. Not just “look how great my content is”.
If you’re stuck, it’s probably because you’re breaking one of these. Fix that, and everything else gets easier.
No matter HOW good your content is, you have to play by the rules. No, that doesn’t mean sacrificing your authentic view and delivery, but if you want the results of those winning, play by the rules.
Oh… something else fun to share with y’all,
For the first time in many years, I’ll be stepping on stage! I’ve been invited to speak at the Austin Entrepreneurial Summit 2025 to talk all things branding which I’m so excited to do. The last time I was in Austin TX, was performing at SXSW nearly 16 years ago. How much life has changed.
I’ll be talking about the Attention Code on May 5th and if you want to come, here’s the link. It’s something I’ve been building to simplify the art of getting attention on media without shaking your ass or cheap parlour tricks. I've had so many people explode in growth applying these principles, so to talk about it on a stage will be fun and I’m hoping to impact a lot of people. Also at the event are some legends like Matt King, Brandon Turner and my boy, my gringo, Jamie Gruber speaking.
“Bo, are you just emailing me to promote this event and get me there?!” Yes hahaha! I’d LOVE to see you if you are in Austin between May 4th - May 6th. Let’s grab some BBQ and coffee! If enough people are interested, we might host a mini meet up and branding masterclass.
Until next week
Bo
