The AI Social Media Invasion

The rise of AI has been astonishing in every field, and social media has probably been one of the most prevalent examples of people using it for content.

I think AI is an incredible thing, however, I see it so overused now that people just phone in their content with no actual thought in what’s going out. AI has to be used right.

Tools like ChatGPT, Descript, and Gemini are just that… tools. Do not rely on ChatGPT to write everything for you. You see those posts online saying “ask chatgpt to create a content calendar to give you 50 scripted posts for the month”. Absolute nonsense. Can it do it? yes, Should you? no.

I cannot confirm from my sources but there is the potential for content to be shadowed if it’s primarily AI generated. I’ve seen enough data to suggest there could be a shadowing on non organic content, so best to play it safe on those terms.

For social, here are the 3 biggest giveaways something is AI written and how to fix them if you are using it:

The dreaded EM DASH (—)

This thing has invaded our feeds and writing like pulled pork and salted caramel invaded the UK in the early 2000’s. I know some incredibly intelligent people who went to the likes of Oxford, Harvard, NYU and I have yet to ever see them use an em dash in any work. Is it technically correct? yes, is it a dead giveaway that it’s AI written, 100%.

Hashtag capitalisations

Since the dawn of hashtags, we’ve written them like this #ilovehenrycavill but since the introduction of AI, people are using generic hashtags from Chatgpt and they are popping out like this - #ILoveHenryCavill. Bizarre capitalisations which have never been part of our social culture. Again another giveaway.

Volume of content

This is the biggest giveaway, people who posted once or twice a week now with the wisdom of a hundred people posting twice a day and it’s relentless. Yes, I believe 90% of creators should up their quantity but you gotta put in the work with the team and make it serve your community. Our feeds are now just flooded with D-rate AI written content that AI thinks what you want to hear. Think about that…. if Chatgpt is creating most peoples content, then it’s just Chatgpt we’re following in different guises… scary.

Takeaway

AI is not bad, it’s changed the world, but just be aware of how to use it to get ahead instead of phoning it in. Should you be using AI for social media? 1000%, if you’re not, you will be left behind, but don’t forget what makes us human. Our ability to connect. Use AI to turbo charge what you do, not replace it.
